When to Book Greece for Next Summer
Caldera suites and crewed charters are allocated long before most people start planning. A short guide to the dates that actually decide what you can get.
Most people start planning a Greek summer in February. By then, the specific things they have in mind are frequently gone.
This is not a scarcity tactic. It is a function of how small the top of this market is: a caldera hotel might have twenty suites and four with private pools, and a charter fleet in the Cyclades is a few dozen boats.
What goes first, and when#
Nine to twelve months ahead. Private-pool suites in the named Santorini properties for July and August. Crewed catamarans for the first three weeks of August. Villas on the north-east coast of Corfu.
Six months ahead. The better rooms at the Elounda resorts, Sani and the Ikos properties for peak weeks. Anything with the word "villa" attached on Mykonos.
Three months ahead. Most hotels still have inventory, but the good categories are thinning and rates have usually moved up.
Inside six weeks. You are choosing from what is left, which in August is a genuinely poor selection at a genuinely high price.
The two windows worth waiting for#
Late May to mid June. Warm sea, long light, meaningfully lower rates, and the meltemi has not settled in. The best value-to-experience ratio in the Greek year.
The second half of September. The water is at its warmest after a full summer, the islands exhale, and rates fall from the August peak. Our preferred time to be anywhere in the Cyclades.
Both windows are also when availability still exists three or four months out, which is the practical reason to prefer them.
What this means in practice#
If you want a specific suite at a specific property in August, treat the previous autumn as your deadline. If you have flexibility on dates, move the trip to June or September and you buy yourself both a better island and a later decision.
And book the boat at the same time as the room. On Santorini and Mykonos the transfer is the part people leave until last and then regret - both islands have famously few taxis for their visitor numbers.
